Mrs. C0rey's Story
8 She makes us do zany things…she loves to wear wild animal prints…and she always tell us at the end of each class period to, “Have a magical day in the kingdom.” Yes, that is how many of my students describe me. My name is Rosanne Corey, and I have been teaching in the “kingdom” of Maroa-Forsyth Schools for some 34 years now. I began teaching at Forsyth Grade School where I taught 5th or 6th grade (sometimes at the same time) for many moons. I then moved to Maroa when our district adopted attendance centers and taught 5th grade for many more moons. I now teach 7th and 8th grade students English at Maroa-Forsyth Middle School, and I love it.
I grew up just down the road in Warrensburg, Illinois, and attended Warrensburg schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I had many wonderful teachers while at the ‘Burg who inspired me to want to teach. So, I trekked off to Illinois Wesleyan University to become a high school English teacher. After many (and I mean many) changes of majors, I graduated with a degree in K-9 Elementary Education (where my mom swears I should have started anyway) with a minor in English. It truly was divine intervention...there is a long story behind it, too long to tell here, but ask me sometime if you are interested! Anyway, I graduated with honors, got a teaching position at Maroa-Forsyth, and married a my husband Russ, a Chicago area native.
Russ recently retired from his position as PreK through Grade 12 principal at Deland-Weldon Schools. He now spends his days golfing, landscaping our yard, and golfing some more. Russ is a member of the Maroa-Forsyth School Board, a challenge he is really enjoying. We have two lovely daughters: Cassandra who is 28 and Caitlin who is 25. Cassandra, her husband Chris, and my sweet grandsons, Liam and Sawyer, just moved to Decatur from North Carolina. Cassandra is an athletic trainer at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Caitlin and her husband, Jarod, live in Peoria where she works for Erie Insurance Co. We also have an adorable Shih Tzu doggie named Payton that makes me smile everyday. I have a great family, and I love them all.
A few years ago, I returned to school and earned my Masters Degree in Education from Eastern Illinois University. I love being a teacher, but in many ways, I love being a student more. There is just so much to learn in this big world of ours! My hope is that I can make learning fun and meaningful for my students… and that we can all embrace the educational opportunities that abound in this wonderful kingdom we call school. Carpe Diem!
